Note: August CSX Road Closures in Tampa

Nebraska detour.pdf (28 KB)
(download)

We have been dealing with the CSX railroad recently regarding road closures they are causing, throughout the City, for the purpose of maintaining and upgrading their rail at those crossings. CSX has not been very cooperative and they have not provided any notice to the motoring public.

As it turns out CSX,  has easements across our rights-of-way and are exercising their right to do work in our rights-of-way. Unfortunately they need a complete closure of the road at each crossing in order to complete their intended work. They have a contractor on board and have begun work at some locations with little or no notice to us or the public.

We have been trying to work with them through FDOT, since some of the roads are FDOT roads, but have not yet been able to have a meeting with someone responsible in the CSX organization. We are trying to organize a meeting with such a person this week.

If there is good news, they are only able to work on two closures at a time, and the work generally takes about four working days from start to finish, weather providing.

We have obtained their current schedule of planned work and closings. I wanted to provide that to you because I believe we (Council and the Administration) will be receiving calls about these closures. Please know that we are doing all that we can to get this information out to the motoring public.

The current schedule of road closures:

August 1-4:

Cleveland St.   between Willow and Oregon.

Mississippi Ave.  between Howard and Georgia.

August 8-11:

Nebraska Ave.  between Zack St. and Nuccio Pkwy.

Platt St.   at Dakota Ave.

August 15-18:

Dale Mabry  between Gandy Blvd and Fair Oaks.  (This is going to be a major undertaking. FYI the entrance to the Selmon Expressway on Dale Mabry will continue to be open and will operate throughout the closure.)

Howard Ave. between Watrous and Morrison.

August 22-25:

21st St. between 5th Ave. and 7th Ave.  (This is a major one-way truck route. We are working to get the info out to the Port etc.)

S. MacDill Ave.   at Santiago St. (This is just south of the MacDill/Bay-to-Bay intersection)

August 29-September 1:

Euclid Ave. between Himes Ave. and Lynwood Ave.

Doyle Carlton Dr. between Cass St. and Polk St.

We have not seen a schedule from CSX for any work they plan in September but I do suspect there will be some planned. As soon as we meet with them and we find out about additional work in September we will let you know. We are keeping an eye on the Platt St. Bridge closure planned for October and will work to ensure that we do not have a CSX closure during the Platt St. Bridge closure, that negatively impacts our proposed detours and alternate routes.

Please send any questions, concerns or citizen inquiries to Debbie Herrington at 813.274.8333.

Want to Volunteer on August 9th to Help Children Design the Playground of Their Dreams?

Kaboom

It may have monkey bars, swings, slides, tetherball, and a rock-climbing wall -- whatever it ends up with it will be the playground of their dreams and it will begin on Tuesday, August 9 at 5 p.m. with the children from the neighborhood surrounding Cuscaden Park, located at 2900 N. 15th Street

A professional playground designer from KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization whose mission is to create great playspaces through the participation and leadership of communities, will meet with the children to help them design their own play space. Parent are also encouraged to attend and give input beginning at 6 p.m.

Once the plans are finalized, the community playground build day will take place on Saturday, October 22. In less than eight hours, the playground that these children dreamed about on August 9, will become a reality as 200 or so volunteers build the playground from scratch.  The project is funded in part by the Friends of Tampa Recreation, Inc., a not for profit organization that raises funds to support the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department's programs and activities.

This is the fourth time the City of Tampa has teamed with the national playground builder KaBOOM! to create a new play space in Tampa. The first community playground build took place in 2007 at Highland Pines Park. Other builds took place in 2009 at Wellswood Park and in 2010 at the NFL Yet at Jackson Heights.

For more information or to volunteer on build day please call 274-8714.

DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 30, 2011

Rx_long

As part of our ongoing effort to crack down on illegal pill mills and prevent prescription drug abuse, we are taking part in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. On April 30th, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Tampa Police Department, will collect unused or expired prescription medications from citizens to prevent potentially dangerous drugs from getting into the wrong hands. The unused prescription drugs will be collected at four Sweetbay locations on April 30th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Citizens will be able to drop off any prescription medications they no longer use and can remain anonymous, with no questions asked.

Attorney General Pam Bondi will be at the Sweetbay location in Valrico at 10:00 am speaking about how important this initiative is and the dangers of keeping prescription drugs in the home. “Often the family medicine cabinet is where the prescription drug abuse problem begins. By participating in this national event, parents and families can help protect their loved ones by providing a safer home environment,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance supports this take back initiative and will provide volunteers and educational materials at the collection sites.
